Private Party or Dealer: Private Party

This 1961 Jaguar Mk 2 is equipped with a 3.8-liter DOHC straight-six, 3-speed automatic, and limited-slip differential. The car benefits from a rolling cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment started by its previous owner of 17 years and continued by the seller, who has owned it since June 2014. Cosmetics were addressed in the late 1990s and early 2000s, while mechanical freshening included new power rack and pinion steering and a rebuilt braking system along with fueling, electrical, and exhaust updates. The car scored well in a 2007 JCNA concours and is described by its seller as a usable example that comes with extensive records for the refurbishment work. It is sold with a clean California title.

The refurbishment work began with the previous owner in Oak Park, Illinois and was finished at his second home in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Bodywork was performed in 1999, followed by a repaint in the dark indigo blue seen here. The resulting finish is photographed under bright sun and shade below. Most exterior trim was replaced or re-chromed, with some exceptions detailed in close-up shots below. Chrome Dayton knock-off wire wheels wear new 15″ BFGoodrich Advantage T/A rubber under standard spats in the rear.

Exterior lighting includes optional Lucas Fog Rangers and is demonstrated as functional in photos. Several headlamp and taillight seals are showing their age. The original color is unknown, though hints of a lighter blue exist in several places per the seller. A small area of body damage is noted at the rear corner of the left front fender opening. Discoloration at the right rear door sill is from remnants of silicone sealant per the seller, who will install a correct seal there for the new owner.

The interior was reupholstered with new leather in a hue matching included original-spec samples from OSJI. Optional items include reclining front buckets which are equipped with fold-down picnic tables for the rear passengers. Carpeting and underfelts were replaced in 2002 along with a new grey wool cloth headliner and visor covers from BAS. New door seals, wind lacing, window seals, and felt channels were also fitted. Wood trim was refinished and reattached with new hardware. An older trunk mat is lifted out for photos of the floor below.

Instrumentation benefits from replacement of the water temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level senders by the previous owner and the seller. A new brake warning lamp and horns were recently installed, and remaining electricals are described as functional aside from the disconnected clock and aftermarket stereo. The seller rebuilt the heater box with new cables and set up the new control valve to direct outside air straight to the vents rather than over the heater core when shut. Just under 29k miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer, with total mileage unknown.

The non-original 3.8L straight-six originally powered a Series 1 E-type according to the seller's research, while the cylinder head is from an S-Type. Individually filtered SU carburetors benefit from recently re-centered jets, a linkage adjustment, and resynchronization. The engine can be a bit cold-blooded and requires use of a manually-switched cold running circuit until warm. Fuel is supplied from a replacement tank through a new SU pump. A backup pump is also equipped for use after switching of the fuel lines and positive electrical wire. Other updates carried out under prior ownership include new ceramic-coated headers, a stainless exhaust, and Pertronix electronic ignition.

A recent compression test showed between 180 and 190 psi across all six cylinders according to the seller. Electrical duties are handled by a recently rebuilt alternator rather than an original-style generator. Engine and transmission oil were last changed prior to the seller's acquisition of the car. The 3-speed Borg Warner automatic transmission can be held in gear via an intermediate speed hold switch. Power is sent rearward to an an optional Thornton "Powr-Lok" limited-slip differential.

A new power rack and pinion steering unit was sourced from Welsh Enterprises in 2011, while other suspension and steering work under previous ownership included new springs, tie rod ends, and bushings. Brakes benefit from replacement front calipers and rebuilt rear units. A new brake master cylinder, fluid reservoir, and Lockheed servo were added 400 miles ago in December 2015 along with a fresh vacuum tank, shield, check valve, and braided stainless hoses. Some hard lines were also replaced and the parking brake was repaired and adjusted to provide slowing power up to 10-15 mph.

The condition of the drivetrain, suspension, and floors is indicated by underbody show some rust as noted by the seller. A fluid leak at the transmission pan gasket is also pointed out. Records are available from the seller's ownership as well a large collection of invoices and receipts for the work performed by the previous owner. The sale also includes a service manual and parts catalog.

Seller's description:

This 1961 Jaguar Mk2 underwent a multi-year restoration beginning with a rebuilt 3.8-liter engine originally from a 1961 E-Type utilizing a 9:1 compression head from an S-Type and a rebuilt Borg Warner DG-250 3-speed automatic transmission. The car then underwent body work, and was repainted a brilliant 'Indigo Blue' which appears to be the same as the original color of the car. Most exterior trim was replaced or re-chromed. New Dayton wire wheels were mounted, as was a new gas tank. Next, the interior was redone with a new Grey Woolcloth headliner and visor covers, new carpet and underfelt, new seat covers and door panels, new door seals, piping round the doors, window seals, and felt window channel. All the interior wood was refinished. Mechanical renewals beginning with a new stainless steel exhaust system, and new springs at all four corners. An alternator kit replaced the generator. An electronic ignition module (Pertronix) replaced the points and condenser, and a new coil was added. There are two new TRW brake calipers at the front. The rear Dunlop brake calipers were rebuilt. A rack and pinion power steering unit from Welsh Enterprises was installed. The heater box was refurbished with new control cables, new water control valve. The heater core was pressure tested. All new heater and radiator hoses were installed using new stainless clamps. A new aluminum radiator and mounting hardware, a new fan, and new fan shroud were recently added. The braking system was redone using a new brake master cylinder, new brake servo (Lockheed), vacuum tank & shield & check valve & vacuum hoses, braided stainless steel flex lines, some new steel brake lines, new brake fluid reservoir. A new SU fuel pump was installed. Finally, a new bearing for the Center Mounting Assembly that is between the two drive shafts was installed. Mk II's could be had with a few options. The car has the reclining Reutter front seats, a Thornton Power-Lok differential and Lucas Fog Ranger fog lights. The car runs and drives quite nicely. The 3-speed Borg Warner automatic transmission shifts well. The engine starts easily, is responsive, smooth and powerful. The electrics all work. The car will come with a Service Manual, a complete Parts Catalog, many receipts for parts and labor for the rebuild. Among the thick file of invoices are ones for usual maintenance, renewal, and replacement such as tie rod ends, anti-sway bar bushings, sending units for water temp, fuel level, and oil pressure, oil changes, tune ups, brake fluid renewal, transmission fluid replacement and adjustment of band clutches, etc. A recent compression test shows 180,185,190,185,180,180 psi on cylinders 1 to 6.

Dark Blue Paintwork

Private Party or Dealer: Private Party

Lot #93825

This 1961 Jaguar Mark II is powered by a replacement 3.8-liter inline-six mated to a Borg Warner three-speed automatic transmission and Dana Powr-Lok differential. The car is finished in dark blue over black leather upholstery and equipped with power steering, dual SU carburetors, front driving lamps, Pertronix electronic ignition, four-wheel disc brakes, and chrome Dayton knock-off wire wheels. It was previously listed on BaT in September 2017 and acquired by the seller in 2022. Work has since included replacement of the gearbox, belts, and engine mounts. This Mark II is now being offered with an invoice from the service and transferrable New York registration in the seller’s name.

The bodywork is said to have been repainted its current shade of dark blue in the late 1990s, and the brightwork was reportedly re-chromed at that time. Exterior details include Lucas Fogranger driving lamps, removable rear fender skirts, a Jaguar leaper hood ornament, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The trunk seal has been replaced, and the seller notes the presence of scratches around the trunk lock. The passenger-side rear door does not open from the outside.

Chrome Dayton knock-off wire wheels were reportedly installed in the late 1990s, and a full-size spare is found in the trunk. Braking is through four-wheel discs. The power steering rack was reportedly replaced in 2011, while work in 2015 is said to have included replacement of the brake master cylinder, servo, fluid reservoir, lines, and pads. The panhard rod bushings were replaced and the rear axle was aligned around February 2021, and the steering shaft U-joint was repositioned in March 2022.

The cabin is believed to have been reupholstered some time during previous ownership and houses seats trimmed in black leather with replacement door panels and blue carpets. Wood trim extends from the dash to the tops of the doors, and features include reclining front seats, lap belts, toggle switches for vehicle functions, and flip-down tray tables for rear seat passengers. The seller notes that the heater box was rebuilt some time during previous ownership and the wood trim was refinished.

A two-spoke steering wheel with a chrome horn ring sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation that includes a 140-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and a suite of auxiliary displays in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 31k miles, around 1k of which have been added during current ownership, though total mileage is unknown. The analog clock is inoperable, and the ammeter was re-wired in 2022.

The replacement 3.8-liter inline-six was reportedly sourced from a 1961 XKE, while the cylinder head is said to have originated from an S-Type. The engine is equipped with dual SU carburetors as well as Pertronix ignition, a stainless-steel exhaust system, an aluminum radiator, back-up fuel pump, and an alternator in place of the stock generator. The fuel tank was reportedly replaced in the late 1990s, while work since 2013 is said to have included rebuilding the carburetors and starter and replacing the SU fuel pump, vacuum tank, vacuum hoses, and check valve. An oil line was replaced in 2022 along with the belts and engine mounts.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Borg Warner three-speed automatic transmission and a Dana Powr-Lok differential. The replacement gearbox was installed by British European Auto Excellence of San Pedro, California in March 2022, and work the previous year reportedly included cleaning the underside and replacing an exhaust pipe, muffler hangers, and the driveshaft center bearing.

The car does not have a title, as it is being sold in a state that does not issue titles for vehicles of its age. It is being sold with transferrable New York registration.
