Donor for Kougar replica kit car

Ebay item 7/3/13
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1961-Kougar-Jaguar-Sports-Car-Cigar-shaped-body-cycle-fe ...
Car has a buy it now price of $38,995 for 6 days. 25k miles.

Sellers description:
1961 Kougar Jaguar Sports Car: These cars were manufactured in England and were available as a completely built up car and in some cases supplied in a kit version. Jaguar donor cars have always been used for the mechanical side of it. The example utilizes and is titled as a 1961. The engine is Jaguars' 3.8 litre double overhead camshaft version coupled to a 4-speed manual gearbox with Laycock De Normanville overdrive transmission. Equipped with dual SU carburetors and producing about 230 horsepower. The suspension is all Jaguar and uses the inboard disc brake fully independent rear suspension along with rack & pinion steering, plus independent front suspension with disc brakes.

This version was built in LHD form. It has a hoop roll bar fitted and the dash is done with the original Smiths style Jaguar instruments, it is laid out differently but has a definite Jaguar flavor! It has a Jaguar telescopic steering column. Wheels are chrome wires. The windshield is the very early variety supplied by Kougar on the Series One cars, being the wrap around very sporty and sleek looking Perspex (Plexiglas) version. Finished in traditional British Racing Green w/black interior. The fibreglass body could be described as a "cigar shaped body, cycle fendered, roadster". No wipers, no heater, no top, two piece-tonneau only for protection.

The present owner, located near Villanova, PA 19010, has owned it for aprox. two years and purchased it in California at "Cars With Class" of Santa Monica. He changed the white exhaust to black, otherwise it's the same as when he purchased it, and having not many miles since, and only selling due to lost storage. Everything works on the car, it includes an additional wood steering wheel. The car has been very reliable and has not been in any accidents. It has a current antique Pennsylvania license plate and a clean PA title.

This is the appraiser's report: (West Coast Auto Appraisals) "A great car, built in the 70's or 80's, runs good, great oil pressure hot and cold, temperature is dead on 70 even in traffic, electric cooling fan, overdrive works, lights all work, engine looks rebuilt, hi quality chassis made from tubular metal, jag suspension front & rear, disc brakes all around, rotors show no wear, drives great, stops well, shifts well, heavy clutch, pretty comfortable to drive, seats feel good, you could drive it a long distance, steering very direct, all gauges work, suspension is very tight even on rough surfaces, considering what the car is, much better than any other kit car that I have driven"

Thinking of building one yourself? First you have to buy an unpainted kit and have it shipped from England, pay import duty, etc. Next find a suitable donor car, disassemble it, rebuild the components you're going to use, dispose of the donor car, oh, and did I mention having a garage, tools, know how & time for this project? Assemble the car, paint the chassis and body, and then finally have it registered & titled in your state. I only present this scenario to give you an idea of what goes into these "kit cars". This is after all, a very light car, with tremendous acceleration. You want to make sure the project was done right and can be driven safely! My point is, the price I am asking is reasonable, when you take all of these factors into consideration. One further point, here is a car that can be driven now, legally, here in the USA with a PA title, no waiting! This car appears to be either a factory or a very high quality independently built car, no exaggeration! There is a strong club support for Kougars and they are raced extensively, the company is still in business and the original owner is still involved even though he doesn't own the company anymore!

Car to be at auction 3/15
www.auctionsamerica.com/events/feature-lots.cfm

Auction description:
1961 Jaguar Roadster by Kougar Sports
Lot No. 350
To be offered on Saturday, March 28, 2015
Offered Without Reserve
Estimate: $ 55,000 - $ 65,000

This is a splendid tribute to classic Jaguar racecars in the form of a Kougar-bodied machine that is reported to be built entirely from Jaguar components from the XK era; being finished in British Racing Green helps to convey this English heritage. It is said to be one of approximately 200 similar machines produced over the years, making it a quite uncommon sports car. The car is further stated to have upgraded parts that could be found on the fabulous and renowned Jaguar C-Type racecar. In fact, this platform is said to be ready to accept a C-Type racecar body if the new owner should desire this conversion.

The Kougar was originally designed by Rick Stevens, founder of Kougar Cars in 1979; although the first cars (approximately 30 in number) were marketed by a company named Storcourt Wells Ltd. Mr. Stevens built the original prototype in 1976, which incorporated an all-aluminum body. All of the ensuing Kougar models were supplied with fiberglass body shells. Rick Stevens still maintains an active interest in the Kougar Owner's Club as its president.

This particular sports car design was not directly inspired by any particular vehicle, although the styling points to influences from possibly the beautifully designed Frazer Nash TT and also the impressive Healey Silverstone. It is reported that over the years approximately 60-percent of the cars were supplied as kits, the other 40-percent were complete cars supplied by Kougar. Of these, around 20-percent were registered as new and contained all-new parts from Jaguar Cars Ltd. Some of these new vehicles were sold by H.R. Owen in London along with other distributors.

Service on this excellent example of Kougar Jaguar is up-to-date; it is on call to be driven and enjoyed by its next owner.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
