Car was at auction 7/16
bringatrailer.com/listing/1963-jaguar-mark-2/
Sold On 7/5/16 For $18,888
Auction description:
Lot #1621
Location: North Bethesda, MD
Chassis: 230867BW
75k miles
3.8L engine with OD transmission
Restored in late '80s
Recent mechanical refresh
Modern updates including power steering
This 1963 Jaguar Mark 2 is equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive and is offered by its long-term owner of 27 years. The seller purchased the car in 1989 from Autocats in the UK, where it had been given a ground up restoration that included a number of modern upgrades such as air conditioning, cruise control, and power steering. The restoration cost was around $25k in 1988-1989, including the price of the donor vehicle. The car has a total of 75,000 miles and has been driven over 25k miles in the 27 years since the restoration. It currently shows some cosmetic flaws but remains in good mechanical condition, with over $4k spent on recent maintenance and repairs.
The car was painted the current metallic dark red as part of the 1989 restoration. The restorer selected a rust free car as a foundation and body and interior work was done to spec; according to the seller it was effectively a new car when he took delivery. He has since enjoyed it regularly over many thousand miles on the road. Paint remains presentable but is showing its age with various chips and scratches. The most notable flaw is a small area of bubbling paint on the corner of the passenger side front door due to a clogged drain hole, which has since been repaired.
The bumpers and other chrome trim are intact and straight. They polish up nicely but have some light pitting.
Aftermarket wire wheels with knock-offs are installed and wear new radial tires. Some light surface rust is visible on the wheels.
The interior was also restored in the late '80s and leather seats are now faded and creased with some tears. The wood veneer on the dash is cracked. The carpets, door panels, and headliner remain in good condition. The seller had several modern conveniences installed at restoration time including a telescoping steering column, air conditioning, central locking, alarm system, AM / FM cassette stereo, and cruise control. The A/C system is not currently working and the central locking system and interior lighting need electrical sorting.
The car is equipped with a Jaguar 3.8 inline 6 and 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. Mechanical modifications include a dual circuit brake system, power rack and pinion steering, uprated suspension from a Jaguar 340 saloon, stainless steel dual exhaust, and electric auxiliary radiator fan. Recent maintenance and repair work includes the following:
Rebuilt carburetors
New fuel pump, hoses, and filter
Reworked wiring with new central fuse box
New speedometer
New coil and spark plugs
Replaced engine gaskets and repaired oil pan
New battery
New tires
The car is said to run well with good power while getting around 25+ MPG on the highway.
The frame and undercarriage were rustproofed at the time of the restoration and remain in good condition.
The seller has all maintenance and repair records dating back to the 1989 restoration. This Mark 2 is being offered by a long term owner and has a number of custom modifications to improve comfort and drivability. It can be enjoyed as-is or given a cosmetic update to bring it to the next level.
