Of the many Jaguar race preparers in the UK, one name stands out head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to quality, fine detail and results on the race track. That name is M and C Wilkinson, the Yorkshire based historic Jaguar race car specialists behind many race winning Jaguars of note.
This car was acquired by Mike Wilkinson direct from the serious racing Jaguar collection of Alan Lloyd, who was the founder of Lloyds Chemists and an ex main board director of Jaguar Cars Ltd. Alan had acquired this genuine UK right hand drive Jaguar MkI saloon and converted it to full historic racing specification in 1990 and then campaigned it throughout Europe for several seasons with considerable success. Alan retired from racing about 10 years ago and Mike was first in the queue to acquire this special car and continue it's racing pedigree to the current day.
Outside, it looks truly stunning in Carmen Red and inside, the racing seat, harness and competition dash evoke memories of the late John Coombes and his highly respected racing saloons of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The 3.4 'B-Type' head engine is freshly rebuilt by Sigma Engineering ,who set a new record for a 3.4 with their power output achieved on the dyno. A new aluminium radiator keeps everything cool and the 4 speed synchro gearbox benefits from a refresh, as does the rear axle which incorporates a 'Powerlock Gripper' limited slip differential. The FIA spec brakes (Mk9 calipers and discs with drums at the rear) are new, as are the hubs, wheels, Koni dampers and suspension. A new 'bag tank' sits in the boot and the car is now fully ready to race.
The car has competed at one 'shake down' race at Donington with the HRDC in 2014 and is now a competitive and front running car in the right hands. It is known to Goodwood and is eligible for racing in the Revival - subject, of course, to securing an invitation!

Lot 80
1956 Jaguar Mk 1 3.4-Litre Appendix K Competition Saloon
Goodwood Members' Meeting
16 April 2023
£55,000 - £65,000
Registration no. TGW 273
Chassis no. S905112DN
• Converted to racing specification in 1990 for Allen Lloyd
• Sigma Engineering engine
• Four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox
• Jaguar Mark 9 front disc brakes
• HTP valid for the next 10 years
Converted to racing specification in 1990 and purchased by our vendor in 2021, this Jaguar Mark 1 saloon is a race-winning FIA Appendix K car that has competed at the Le Mans Classic, Masters and Historic Racing Drivers Club (HRDC) events. The Jaguar had previously been acquired from the Allen Lloyd collection, for whom it had been race-prepared by renowned marque specialists M&C Wilkinson Ltd. The car complies with the HRDC specification booklet and has a Historic Technical Passport (HTP) valid for the next 10 years.
'TGW 273' completed the 2021 racing season with two 2nd-in-class finishes, and is currently looked after by restoration and race preparation specialists. The car is finished in Carmen Red, with '49' door emblems and decals from Motor Racing Legends, Ecurie Classic Racing, Advalorem and the Pall Mall Cup, plus a tribute to the UK's first Formula 1 World Champion, Mike Hawthorn.
It is powered by a 3.4-litre version of the robust XK six, which drives via the four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox via competition clutch. Built to racing specification by Sigma Engineering, the engine now fitted with a B-Type cylinder head; three 2" SU carburettors; and a stainless steel straight-through exhaust. Other notable features include an aluminium radiator with silicone hoses; and an Aeroquip fuel system with a new pump and tank.
The rear axle is a Sayer racing specification item, and the suspension has been uprated. Stopping power comes from FIA-compliant Jaguar Mark 9-specification front disc brakes, and the car rides on 15" wire-spoked wheels, shod with Dunlop Racing tyres. The shock absorbers, brake discs, brake pads, brake callipers and servo were all replaced in 2021. The interior features a full roll cage; three-spoke steering wheel; Sparco bucket driver's seat with a Sabelt harness; Willans harness for the original passenger seat; Racelogic telemetry system; and simplified switchgear controls on the wood-trimmed dashboard.
We are advised by the vendor that there has been no known bodywork damage. The Carmen Red paintwork is in good condition, albeit with stone chips to the bonnet, sills and door panels, in keeping with the car's competition use. Inside, imperfections can be seen where the racing switchgear has been installed; there is a tear in the gear lever boot, as well as minor discolouration to the floor panels and around the roll cage bolts. No mechanical or electrical faults have been detected. The vendor bought the car at the beginning of 2021. It's been run for the 21/22 season without a DNF. Including:
12/13 June 2021: Motor Racing Legends, Jaguar Classic Challenge, Thruxton, 2nd in Class
30/31 October 2021: Motor Racing Legends, RAC Pall Mall Cup, Silverstone, 2nd in Class
30/31 October 2021: Motor Racing Legends, Jaguar Classic Challenge, Silverstone, 1st in Class
7/8/2022: Ecurie Classic, Hawthorne Trophy, Silverstone, 2nd in Class
13/8/2022: Bentley Drivers Club, Hawthorne Trophy, Silverstone, 2nd in class
It comes with various spares (wheels/tyres and minor items) and it's original twin carb head set up.
