This particular 2.4 Saloon (latterly dubbed the MK1 by the Motor Trade) was built on the 26th March 1956. It was first registered in Ilford Essex 19th April 1956 by Henley's. It had a change of address to Worthing Sussex 20th October 1958.It was then bought the vendors father on 16th August 1971, from a dealer in Sunbury on Thames, how it came to be with a dealer in Middlesex is not known or what happened to the first owner. The car was in regular use until about May/June 1975, when the car failed an MOT on the front suspension and steering joints. By this time the mileage was 36,980. The car was then stored in a leaky garage which at some time collapsed, causing no damage to the car but during its time in the old garage the cylinder head had been removed and mice had nested in the bores. The car was in a sorry state.
The vendor bought the car from his father on 1st February 1989, with the intention of restoring it. The restoration was a ground up affair undertaken by the vendor with the help of specialists , for the body work and mechanics. The car was taken apart and then put it back together, piece by restored piece The restoration was completed in June 1990 when the car had its first MOT since 1975. This restoration was featured by Jaguar Enthusiast Magazine between June and Oct 1990.
The car is the 939th to be built out of a total production of 19, 992 (both rhd & lhd) between September 1955 and September 1959 when it was replaced by the MKII. The vendor believes that the car could be one of earliest 2.4 Saloons still in road-worthy condition.
In the early years, after the restoration was completed, the car won many concours competitions and featured in Country Living by Frank Page in 1991, Jaguar Quarterly June 1992,Classic and Sport Car November 1994 and Classic Cars July 1994.
To date the car has been driven on rally/tours in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Isle of Man, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, America (New England), Canada and of course England.
In 1999 I had the head converted to unleaded fuel and also fitted an overdrive unit. New tyres fitted @ 89736 miles, Brake shoes re-lined @ 85080 miles, New Battery @ 91587 miles
The car is only now offered for sale due to the poor health of the owner and is complete with all log books from first registration, Mot's from 1990, full photo record of restoration, original tool box, original front and rear number plates, workshop service manual and workshop spares manual and numerous advertising and related items.
In the words of the vendor "If only GOLF doors shut like this MK1".

Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th January 2023
1956 JAGUAR MKI 2.4. THE ‘ENDEAVOUR' TV SERIES CAR
Estimate: £35,000 - £45,000
V5 present
MoT exempt
Chassis number: S900939
If this smart MkI 2.4 Jaguar looks familiar, that's because it was the automotive star of several series of ITV's Endeavour, the Inspector Morse TV prequel that began in 2012. In the detective show, it is used by both the main characters Morse (Shaun Evans) and DI Thursday (Roger Allam). Chassis number S900939 was the 939th car to be built from of a total production of 19,992 MkIs between Sept 1955 and Sept 1959, and is believed to be one of the earliest surviving 2.4 saloons still in road-worthy condition.
Registered in April 1956, the 2483cc luxury saloon comes to us direct from the film car supplier. Its last MoT expired in March 2018, but as an historic vehicle, it no longer requires annual testing. The car was restored in the late 1980s/early 1990s and was a well-known vehicle on the show and event circuit before its TV career. The odometer now shows 95,183 miles. A brief history of the car, included in the paperwork file, which helps confirm the mileage and that the car was off the road between mid-1975 (when its mileage was recorded as 36,980) and mid-1990 (when its restoration was completed). In 1999 it had an unleaded head fitted and was fitted with an overdrive unit.
The paperwork includes the V5C, period Jaguar parts catalogue, service manual and mounted magazine advert and a large album with many photographs of the restoration between February 1989 and May 1990, together with some of the magazine/newspaper and event appearances of the machine. There's also a Jaguar dating letter, old buff, green and V5 logbooks, 1974 and 1975 tax discs, petrol ration book, lubrication chart and two owner's manuals, along with a box of magazines and newspapers relating to the MkI, many featuring this car in particular. The MoT certificates date from 1990 to 2008 and 2012 to 2018, and there are a handful of 21st century bills, plus instructions from a previous owner on how best to start the car from cold.
