Car was at auction 5/24
www.brightwells.com/timed-sale/5528/lot/694347
Auction description:
1964 Jaguar MkII 3.8 MOD
Auction Ends: Wed 8th May
Registration Number 656KNX
Engine Size 3781cc
Engine Number LC.83948
Chassis Number P231895BW
Gearbox Manual
Documents V5C, 20 old MOT's, invoices, handbooks.
Tax and MOT status Tax and MOT exempt
This former multiple show-winner has been in the same family ownership since 1988 with just two owners prior to that.
The indicated mileage of 65,162 is believed correct and is supported by a batch of 20 old MOT certificates dating from 1972 onwards when it had covered 48,000 miles.
At the time of purchase in 1988 the odometer was showing 61,000 miles, so it has only seen occasional use, being maintained by the same local garage throughout the current 36-year ownership.
It has been in storage for the last few years due to age and subsequent passing and was entrusted to the same garage in 2022 for a full recommissioning at a cost approaching £9,000!
This work involved the removal of the engine and gearbox to facilitate a full overhaul of the cylinder head and valves - including skimming. A new clutch was fitted at the same time together with a full brake overhaul with new calipers, pipes, discs and pads. They fitted electronic ignition and overhauled the carburettors too and it was subsequently road tested and taken for MOT which it passed in August last year with no advisories.
Since then, a new stainless steel exhaust system and new period correct number plates have been added, bringing the overall spend to more than £10,000.
The original interior is completely unspoilt and a wonderful place to be - the seats being free from damage and the leather nice and supple. There is no staining to the headlining and the wood trim has been professionally repolished. The door rubbers have been changed and period correct seat belts fitted front and rear.
The paintwork is in good overall condition with a lovely shine, although there are a few small areas which would benefit from attention in due course (shown in the photos) but little that detracts from the overall impression of a highly original, carefully stored and maintained example.
The history file includes the aforementioned invoice for recommissioning, bill of sale from 1988, a sheaf of MOTs from 1972 onwards, handbooks and workshop manual and it comes with the original tool kit mounted in the spare wheel.
Looking fabulous in Opalescent Golden Sand with tan leather interior, it sits on good chrome wire wheels and looks very sharp.
It further benefits from factory fitted power steering -a rare, desirable and some would say vital fitment. At some time in the past, the Borg Warner auto gearbox has been replaced by the Jaguar all-syncromesh four-speed unit with overdrive as fitted from '65 onwards and is a highly desirable upgrade.
The engine is reported to be performing extremely well since the overhaul and the gearbox and overdrive have been working as they should since arrival on site.
A rare opportunity to purchase a genuine, top-quality low mileage 3.8 Mk2 from long-term ownership.

Car returns to auction 3/26
www.handh.co.uk/auction/lot/lot-1964-jaguar-mkii-38/
Auction description:
18th Mar, 2026 Kelham Hall, Newark, Nottinghamshire
1964 Jaguar MkII 3.8
Former award winner and in single family ownership for thirty-six years
Estimate £20,000 - £25,000
Registration No: 656 KNX
Chassis No: P231895BW
MOT: Exempt
Former multi-award winner during the 1990s/2000s
Home market car with 'matching' chassis and engine numbers
Factory-fitted power steering and previously uprated with a Jaguar all-synchromesh four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox
Pleasingly retains its original leather upholstery
Recently subject to £10,000 worth of fettling
Factory finished in the elegant combination of Opalescent Golden Sand with Tan leather upholstery, chassis P231895BW also featured the larger 3.8 litre DOHC straight-six engine, Borg Warner automatic transmission and power steering. Beginning life in Warwickshire - or so its ‘656 KNX’ registration number which was issued on February 25th 1964 would imply - the sports saloon spent much of the 1970s and 1980s on the Isle of Wight. The accompanying V5C Registration Document shows just four former keepers the last two of whom were members of the same family. Acquired by its penultimate custodian’s father from Rossleigh of Perth for the princely sum of £16,000 on February 16th 1988, the marque specialist is thought to have been responsible for uprating the MKII with its current all-synchromesh Jaguar four-speed manual plus overdrive transmission. A photo on file attests to the sports saloon being a regular classic car show attendee and award winner during the 1990s and into the current millennium. Used less frequently in recent years, the 65,800 miles shown by the four-seater’s odometer could well represent the total covered from new especially given the interior’s impressive state of preservation (the wood veneers have been refinished but the other materials look decidedly original). Entrusted to Witherspoon Motor Services of Ravelston during late 2023, ‘656 KNX’ was treated to an oil / coolant service, new clutch, cylinder head skim / fettling, brake system overhaul and rejuvenated carburettors not to mention the installation of electronic ignition at a cost of £8,956.37. While more recent work has encompassed the fitment of four fresh tyres. Pleasingly retaining its original engine (LC8394-8), this appealing MKII is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, operating, maintenance and service handbook and history file.
Sold for £23,062
