This 1961 Jaguar Mark II was purchased by the seller’s grandfather in 1985 and acquired by the seller in 2020. The car is finished in white over red leather and is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes 15″ wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, driving lights, burl wood trim, and an AM radio. Work carried out under the seller’s ownership consisted of rebuilding the steering box and carburetors, along with replacing the exhaust system, tires, fuel tank, servo, battery, fuel sending unit, heater pipe set, fuel pump, brakes, belts, and fluids. This Mark II is now offered with service records, owner’s and repair manuals, literature, a tool kit, and a clean Virginia title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in white and was reportedly refinished under previous ownership. Features include a Jaguar leaper hood ornament, chrome bumpers and trim, a left fender mirror, an antenna, driving lights, removable rear fender skirts, and dual exhaust outlets. Areas of cracking paint are present on the front fenders, and blemishes are visible on the edges of the passenger doors and rear fender skirt.

15” wire wheels are secured with two-eared knockoffs and mounted with 185-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. The tie rod end nuts, drag link pins, and steering coupler were replaced in August 2020, and the steering box was rebuilt in June 2021. Stopping is handled by four-wheel disc brakes, and the master cylinder, pads, hoses, and fluid were also replaced in August 2020.

The cabin is upholstered in red leather with a matching center console, door panels, and carpets. Equipment includes front and rear vent windows, a map light, two-speed windshield wipers, a heater, and a B.M.C.D. AM radio. The dashboard lights and fog light wiring were repaired in June 2021.

An aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of a wood dashboard housing a 140-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock. Auxiliary gauges in the center stack include displays for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows just under 97k miles. The factory steering wheel is included in the sale.

The 3.8-liter inline-six breathes through twin SU carburetors and was factory rated at 220 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of torque. Work carried out from August 2020 onward consisted of rebuilding the carburetors, along with replacing the exhaust system, tires, fuel tank, servo, battery, fuel sending unit, heater pipe set, fuel pump, belts, and fluids.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission.

Service and owner’s manuals are included in the sale, along with literature, a tool kit, and service records.

The data plate shows car number P216677BW and the car is titled in Virginia using VIN J61P216677BW. [note: California applied the J6x prefixes on new British imports in the 60s]

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
