Auction description:
Sale 19363 - Quail Lodge Sale, 18 Aug 2011 to 19 Aug 2011
California, Carmel
Lot No: 413
1949 Jaguar Mark V Drophead Coupe
Chassis no. 647008
Engine no. Z3907
This Mark V is finished in one of the best looking liveries for these cars, black paint with deep tan upholstery. The exterior color accentuates the plethora of chrome on these cars, large headlights with additional driving lights, twin bar bumpers, side lights, mirrors and 'pram irons' on the sides of the top, while the warm color of the tan leather blends well with the sumptuously appointed interior with wood veneers trims and dash. On this car, the wheel arches are lifted by the sensible choice of whitewall tires which contrast well with the bodywork color.
According to an on-line registry of these cars, back in 1981 the car resided with a Lt. Col. John P. Kelly, and was awaiting restoration. This must have been accomplished shortly after this as the car has now resided with its current custodian for nearly a decade, and it had been restored some years prior to this acquisition. Today, this work now shows a little age, but remains very presentable. As well as the copious brightwork, the car can boast a fully stocked tool tray in its trunk lid.
Estimate: US$75,000 - 100,000

$100,000 - $125,000

Celebrity Provenance
Classic Pre-War Styling
Beautifully Aged Restoration
Stunning Jaguar Elegance
Accompanied by Original Manuals and a JDHT Certificate
This elegant Mark V combines an older restoration and celebrity provenance to result in a highly desirable example of Jaguar's innovative post-war drop head coupe. According to a certificate issued by the JDHT, this car was completed on January 16, 1950. As suggested by its chassis number, it was likely only the eighth left-hand-drive Mark V Drop Head Coupe equipped with the powerful 3 1/2-litre engine.
Dispatched for Hornburg Jaguar in Los Angeles on February 1st, this car was sold new by International Motors of Hollywood, California, to renowned actor Robert Mitchum. The luxurious and imposing Mark V was certainly an appropriate choice for the budding Hollywood star whose numerous roles in noir films had already earned him a bad-boy reputation. According to an older Mark V registry, by 1981 this car belonged to Lt. Colonel John P. Kelly, who was then in the process of restoring it.
Beautifully prepared, this rare Mark V Drop Head Coupe continues to display the benefits of its aging restoration, showing a warm patina in its paintwork and interior. The black exterior finish wonderfully offsets the whitewall tires, the gleaming chrome of the grille and leaping cat mascot. The interior is equally enchanting, with nuanced craftsmanship displayed in the delicate polished burr walnut of the instrument panel, garnish rails and windowsills. Including an authentic tool kit, this classic Jaguar Drop Head Coupe offers luxurious open-air touring and elegant British styling.

Nice car, but the hood (top) is the wrong colour, Dark Sand is brown, the top on the restored car looks more like "Fawn" which was not an option back then. French Grey would be the closest in tone, but it's grey, and Gunmetal (not an option on a Black car) was a darker grey.
