Auction description:
Saturday 10th January 2004
Lot 315
1961 Jaguar 3.8 MkII Litre
Registration no: JUO 900E
Chassis no: 235278DN
Estimate: £7,000-8,000

Registered JUO 900E this smart Mark II boasts the most powerful 3.8 litre engine with 9:1 compression ratio which endowed these gentlemen's express sports saloons with virtually the same performance as its G.T. relation the E-type.

With matching numbers, a Webasto sunroof, chrome wire wheels and manual overdrive gearbox it has the most desirable specification of all and it is easy to see why these cars are still so revered.

Finished in red with contrasting black interior it is described by the vendor as having an excellent engine with good body and interior although the paintwork would benefit from some attention. Offered with history file comprising old MoTs, the all important Heritage certificate and invoices of past work carried out.

2nd owner of JUO. Sold for 750 pounds in 72 apprx, wish I'd have kept. Had 145 mph with 5 up and luggage, still accelerating when I ran out of motorway on the M20. Serviced, tweekd by a NZ man in Torquay. Bullet proof engine and performance Left 4.2 e types and Capri Commanche for dead. If I sell a screenplay I'll get it back. Done about 100,000 when I sold it.

Yes that was me,only I'm a Torquay man not a New Zealander. I owned that car 3 times in the 70/80s back then it had cream leather trim. I did all the mods on it put a straight port head and 2inch carbs- 6 branch manifold- 9.1 pistons- lightened flywheel also advanced the exhaust cam slightly, which really made it pull on high revs, in those days I would regularly pull 130/140mph in it,(god those were the days)The last time I owned her was when I bought it back from an ins company due to rear end damage and replaced the n/s rear corner. I was a regular for many years at the Jaguar drivers club meeting at Beaulieu which is where I sold it the last time I owned her.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
