Private Party or Dealer: Private Party

Lot #72947

This 1961 Jaguar Mark II is finished in metallic gray over tan leather and is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes 15” wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, dual SU carburetors, fold-down rear tables, and an AM radio. The car is said to have undergone a refurbishment in the 1980s that included a repaint and was acquired by the seller out of California in 2021. Subsequent work is said to have included rebuilding the carburetors and replacing the distributor, ignition coil, spark plugs, ignition wires, steering box, center link, and tie rod ends. This Mark II is now offered with a tool kit, spare parts, partial service records, and a Washington State title in the seller’s name listing the car as a 1962 model.

The body is said to have been refinished in metallic gray under previous ownership and features Coombs-style spats, fender-mounted side mirrors, and chrome bumpers with overriders.

Chrome-finished 15” wire wheels wear knock-off spinners and are mounted with older 205/70 Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes. The steering box, tie rods, and center link were replaced in 2019.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in tan leather with wood trim on the dash, door panels, and window surrounds. Amenities include a push-button AM radio and fold-down wooden tables for rear occupants. The seller recommends refinishing the upper dash and notes that the heater core has been bypassed. A replacement heater core and coolant pipes are included in the sale.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with an inset analog clock. Auxiliary gauges are mounted in the center of the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 80k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors, which are said to have been rebuilt under current ownership. Additional work performed since 2021 reportedly included an oil change and replacement of the distributor, ignition coil, spark plugs, and ignition wires. A replacement cylinder head was rebuilt and installed in 2018, and the car features a screw-on oil filter adapter. The seller notes that the valves may need adjustment, and recommends adjusting or replacing the timing chain.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The seller recommends adjusting the shift points.

The seller is unable to locate the chassis plate on the vehicle itself. Chassis number 217436 is consistent with that of a left-hand-drive 1961 Jaguar MK II with a 3.8L inline-six.

The Washington State title lists “duplicate” under the comments section and “antique” under the brands section.

Lot #222878

This 1961 Jaguar Mk II is said to have undergone a refurbishment in the 1980s that included a repaint in metallic gray. The previous owner acquired the car out of California in 2021, and it was sold on BaT in May 2022. Powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, the vehicle features tan leather upholstery, wood interior trim, a retro-style radio, and fold-down tray tables as well as 15” wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, Coombs-style wheel spats, dual SU carburetors, a Coopers Cleaner air filter, and a negative-ground electrical system. This Mk II is now offered at no reserve in California on dealer consignment with a tool kit and a Washington title that lists the car as a 1962 model.

The car was repainted in metallic gray prior to 2021, according to the previous BaT seller. Equipment includes Coombs-style spats, fender-mounted side mirrors, a pop-up cowl vent, a hood ornament, and chrome bumpers with overriders. Rust is visible at the lower corner seams of the driver door and the windshield washer do not work. The previous BaT seller noted evidence of body filler behind both front wheel wells.

Chrome-finished 15” wire wheels wear knock-off spinners and are mounted with 205/70 Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II tires that show date codes from 2008 and 2009. The car was factory equipped with an independent front suspension and a cantilevered live rear axle. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs. The steering box, tie rods, and center link were replaced in 2019.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in tan leather, and wood trim adorns the dashboard, door panels, and window surrounds. Amenities include a retro-style radio, front and rear vent windows, a fold-down rear center armrest, and fold-down wooden tray tables for rear occupants. Removable covers for the front seats are pictured in the gallery below. Wear is visible on the dashboard, the driver seat is torn, and the passenger seat is cracked. Some trim in the trunk compartment is missing.

The two-spoke steering wheel has a horn ring and an aftermarket wrap. Smiths instrumentation consists of a 140-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock, and centrally positioned auxiliary gauges displaying water temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 80k miles, approximately 250 of which have been added since the previous BaT auction. The seller states that the odometer reading is not accurate, and true mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter XK inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors, which are augmented by a dual-snorkel Coopers Cleaner chrome air-filter setup. The replacement cylinder head is said to have been rebuilt and installed in 2018, and the car features a spin-on oil-filter adapter. The battery for the negative-ground electrical system was replaced and the valves were adjusted with tappet bucket hold-downs in preparation for the sale.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. The transmission mounts were replaced under current ownership, per the selling dealer.

The Washington title lists “duplicate” under the comments section and “antique” under the brands section.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
