    Auction description:
    Lot : 47
1959 Jaguar Mk II 3.8 Litre
    Modified to Rally specification

    Estimate: NOT SOLD
    Registration No: 3838 NX
    Chassis No: 200094DN
    Engine No: LA1774-8
    CC:3824
    Colour: Met. Grey
    Trim Colour: Blue
    MOT: July 2010
The Jaguar MKII 3.8 represents the most potent evolution of the compact saloon range that Sir William Lyons launched in 1955, and this 1959 example has been extensively prepared for competition. It proved reliable in the hands of its former owner, a class winner in the MSA Historic 2000 Championship as well as the Safety Devices series during both 1998 and 1999. The 3.8-litre engine was overhauled by VSE and is unleaded-compatible. With stainless steel tubular manifold and twin carburettors, the power output is claimed to be a very impressive 235bhp. There's a Salisbury limited-slip differential, plus power-assisted rack and pinion steering. Competition suspension and adjustable dampers have been fitted, while braking is handled by Porsche callipers, discs and a hydraulic handbrake. The foam-filled aluminium fuel tank is mounted in the boot and a sumpguard protects the underside of the engine, while safety harnesses and high-backed Corbeau bucket seats, roll cage and plumbed-in fire extinguisher look after driver and co-driver. The body has been modified with Coombs-type rear wheelarches to allow more tyre clearance, and it rides on a good set of wire wheels.

A Vehicle Identification Sheet from Jaguar Daimler Heritage confirms that chassis 200094 DN, was built at Browns Lane on December 3rd 1959 with Pearl Grey paint and red interior, plus overdrive, and was dispatched from the Coventry works on December 16th, bound for Birmingham dealer PJ Evans. There's also a Historic Rally Vehicle Identification Form from the RAC MSA, an RAC MSA Competition Car Log Book, which is mandatory for any car to be able to take part in Special Stage events. The vendor tells us that the paint and coachwork are "fair for the age of the vehicle" and that the chrome is "excellent", he goes on to rate the engine and four-speed overdrive box as "in good running order" and "good" respectively, while the part-retrimmed interior is deemed "reasonable". A notably early MKII 3.8 with more recent competition history, this ready-made rally car would cost considerably more to replicate than it could be bought for in today's auction. With excellent spares availability, `3838 NX' would be perfect for series such as the HRCR Clubmans Rally Championship where it is eligible for pre-1960 awards.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
