In 1956, a new generation of more compact Jaguar saloons came to market, employing unitary-construction rather than a separate chassis and body. Initially, that MkI 2.4 Jag was powered by a 2483cc 6-cylinder, a short-stroke version of the Coventry firm's already world famous XK power unit. For 1957, however, the 3442cc six was also offered in the MkI bodyshell. To counter criticism of narrow rear track skittishness and poor rear three-quarters visibility, a wider-tracked, thinner-pillared Mk2 3.4 with 3781cc option hit showrooms from 1959. The S Type was a restyled Mk2 with the added refinement of independent rear suspension, resulting in a much smoother ride.
Going under the hammer here is a right-hand drive 3.4 S Type, which, the Jaguar Heritage Heritage Trust Certificate on file confirms was manufactured at Browns Lane 28 October 1965, distributed by Henlys to their dealer the Wards Service Garage for Messrs David Crough and Company of London.
According to the Dutch vendor, the saloon was restored in New Zealand in 1988 and imported into Holland in 2001, there being bills on file from October 2001 from a leading Dutch restorer. Bodywork, opalescent dark green paintwork and red interior are said to be all in good condition, and 3.4-litre 6-cylinder engine and 3-speed automatic transmission are also reportedly in good order. The 35,512 miles displayed when entered are believed to be the genuine total."
