Car offered at:

Dönni Classic Car AG

www.jaguarclassic.ch/

Seller's description:

Jaguar Mk2 3.4 Man/OD

1964 with 103,000 original kilometers

CHF 34,500.--

The paintwork shines in its original Golden Sand color. The tan interior is in almost immaculate condition, and some of the wood trim still bears its original nitrocellulose lacquer. All the original carpets are still present. The engine compartment boasts the typical original rough finish. It's simply incredible how original this car is. It appears that the cylinder head has never been removed, as the engine number on the cylinder head is visible through the star-egg green paint and not painted over as is the case with restored heads. We should really keep this Mk2 for ourselves, but unfortunately, we already have two wonderful 3.4s in the family, and so we want to find a good home for this one.

Of course, this car is Swiss, but it was imported by Garage Place Claparède – the French-speaking Swiss and Ticino importer of the time. Therefore, it doesn't have the typical Swiss Lucas fog light setup, but rather – albeit from the same garage – SEV Marchal fog lights. Slightly more robust pins were also used to close the bumper horn mounting slots. There are indications that the car was delivered to Ticino, as there are hardly any welds on this early, otherwise very rust-prone, unibody construction. Naturally, the banned radiator mascot is missing, and the chrome wire wheels are held in place by the typical Swiss-specified central nuts.

Like any car of this age, there are areas where I would deduct points at a Concours d'Originality. But these minor flaws are subjective and have nothing to do with the superb overall condition of this historically important Jaguar Compact Saloon. During the test drive, I was reminded of how, in November 2017, I drove our 3.4-liter Mk1 – which is technically almost identical to this car – to Land's End at the westernmost tip of England, then tackled the extremely tough Le Jog rally across Albion all the way up to John O'Groats, and afterwards "flew" back to Switzerland, without having to worry about even the slightest technical issue. In short, Mk2s are incredibly capable cars that can easily hold their own in today's traffic without ever attracting negative attention and can even – at least in my hands – still dominate it, despite their biblical age of over 60 years. If you're looking for a touring car that's also perfect for a Sunday drive to buy croissants, or for participating in classic car rallies, concours d'elegances, or other events, this highly original car is exactly what you need. Another advantage is that golden sand is such a rare color that you're sure to find no other car like it among the participants. Treat yourself to this iconic vehicle!

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
