The La Carrera Panamericana lasted from 1950 through 1953. It was one of the most sought after trophies with nearly every major European and American manufacturer competing for the prize. The race was held in Mexico and was a treacherous race over public highways and byways. Some of the roads were very rough and narrow which meant the vehicles were required to be very versatile. Special racers were constructed to compete. The President of Mexico would start the race and congratulate the winners. In the 1980s the race was revitalized and again regained its position as one of the most premier events in the world.
The 1961 Jaguar MK II Saloon shown bearing number 103 had been heavily modified for its 1997 entrance into the vintage racing event. The modifications cost over $120,000. The 3999cc engine was highly modified with triple Weber side-draft carburetors and produced an estimated 375 horsepower. The engine was mated to a BMW ZF six-speed manual gearbox with multi-plate racing clutch. It has a limited slip modified differential and a four-wheel disc brakes. All non-essential items were removed in order to lighten the vehicle as much as possible. A roll cage was installed as well as Recaro racing seats and a five-point harness. A racing fuel cell can be found in the trunk of the vehicle.
In 1999 this Jaguar won its class in the Panamericana race.

From its inception in 1950 until the race was cancelled in 1955, La Carerra Panamericana was one of the most sought after trophies in the motor racing arena. Almost every major European and American manufacturer of the time sent factory teams to partake in this grueling road race over the public highways and byways of Mexico.
Fearless privateers worked tirelessly all year to prepare highly modified street cars then drove them south of the border for the chance to compete against the greatest drivers of all time. Such was the enormity of the event, that the President of Mexico would start the race and congratulate the winners.
For three decades La Carrera lay dormant, nothing more than a thrilling memory for those fortunate enough to recall those heady days of Mexican road racing in the early 50s. Then in the 1980s that all changed, and the current retrospective version of La Carrera was born.
An annual event run in the fall, La Carrera Panamericana has now once again become one of the premiere historic road-racing events in the world.
The 1961 Jaguar Mark II offered here was prepared specifically to run in the modified class of the vintage racing event in 1997. At a cost of over $120,000, no expense was spared, ensuring not only a very competitive entry but also a durable and reliable one, with an emphasis being paid to the safety and comfort of the driver and his co-pilot.
The four liter Jaguar twin-cam six-cylinder engine was built to last, employing three twin-choke Weber sidedraft carburetors for optimum power. This torque monster drives an ex-BMW ZF six-speed transmission with a multi-plate racing clutch and powers the rear wheels via a highly modified limited slip rear axle. Huge outboard disc brakes on all four wheels ensure the Mark II stops as well as it goes.
The interior of the car was stripped and lightened, as was the glass. A comprehensive roll cage was installed bumper to bumper and was fitted with Recaro racing seats, five-point harnesses, window mesh curtains and a race spec fire extinguisher system. Fuel is stored in a racing fuel cell mounted in the trunk and supplies the Webers via two independent electronic fuel pumps.
In 1999 two adventurous Englishmen purchased the Jaguar, re-entered the Panamericana and won their class. Since that time the car has seen little use. A rebuilt replacement gearbox has been recently installed and the brakes have received some attention.
This race ready Jaguar is being offered at a fraction of its original build cost, presenting its next lucky owner an opportunity to experience the motor racing splendor of the La Carrera Panamericana in a safe, fast, proven car specifically built for the event. With only minor servicing and attention needed the car will once again be ready to race in Mexico or any other great vintage event.
